Dr Oz Rapid Weight Loss Diet Menu

Fourteen days is all you need to lose 9 or more pounds, claims Dr. Mehmet Oz, the host of "The Dr. Oz Show" and former health expert for "The Oprah Winfrey Show." His Two Week Rapid Weight Loss Plan -- sometimes referred to as Dr. Oz's Fast-Track diet -- promises to enhance health, eliminate toxins and speed metabolism. While the program encourages some healthy lifestyle habits, the food restrictions and speed of weight loss -- most experts recommend not more than 2 pounds per week as a healthy weight-loss goal -- mean many dieters may quickly regain any weight they lose on the diet. Go over the plan with your personal physician or a registered dietitian before beginning Dr. Oz's diet.

Basic Guidelines

Dr. Oz's Two Week Rapid Weight Loss Plan has three facets: a list of allowed foods, a list of restricted foods and specific habits the dieter will need to develop. Followers can have chicken, turkey, fish, brown rice, plain low-fat Greek yogurt, nuts, heart-healthy fats like olive oil and unlimited amounts of vegetables with a low glycemic index, but they cannot have any caffeine, alcohol, red meat, white sugar, artificial sweeteners, wheat products, milk, cheese or fruits other than frozen berries and bananas. Followers are encouraged to exercise at least 30 minutes daily.

A Typical Day on the Plan

Each day begins with hot water and lemon juice, a probiotic supplement and a breakfast smoothie made from rice protein powder, ground flaxseeds, almond milk and fruit. This must be consumed after 8 a.m. Lunch could be white bean and ground turkey chili, but anyone on the diet is allowed only 6 total ounces of meat per day. Dinner might be 3 ounces of grilled salmon served with 1/2 cup of brown rice, steamed vegetables and a salad topped with a yogurt dressing. Snacks could be nuts or pickles. Dieters also take a multivitamin, have a nightly detox bath and drink plenty of green tea and Dr. Oz's detox vegetable broth.

Potential Advantages

University of Missouri assistant professor of clinical family and community medicine, Dr. Jennifer Wisdom-Behounek, praises Dr. Oz's Two Week Rapid Weight Loss Plan for emphasizing vegetables and discouraging processed foods, sugar and added fats like butter. People who adhere to the plan's guidelines will most likely lose weight, which may encourage them to continue following some of the diet's eating practices, such as eliminating red meat. Doing so may help lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, reported a study published in the "Archives of Internal Medicine" in 2012.

Possible Disadvantages

There is no evidence to support Dr. Oz's claim that you need to flush toxins out of your body with nightly Epsom salt baths or vegetable broth to successfully lose weight, says registered dietitian Keri Glassman. And while supplementing with probiotics may help treat diarrhea and vaginal infections in women, more research is needed before they can be recommended as a general immune system strengthener. Wisdom-Behounek says most dieters may not complete the plan because of the many food restrictions. If they do, they may regain any weight they lost after they return to their normal eating habits.
